Why the “obvious choice” for social media platforms isn’t always right

Are you wondering -  What social media platform(s) should my business be on? How do I know which social media platforms to use for my business? Should I be on ALL popular social media platforms or only a few? 

I know that these questions are only some of the MANY questions that you face in your business but I want to talk to you about this BECAUSE its significance and impact are usually overlooked. 


Why does your choice of platform matter? 

So your business has many touch points online through which your clients come in contact with you and these are all the social media platforms out there. I’m talking about Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook, Pinterest, all podcast platforms, professional forums, industry marketplaces and online catalogs etc. You get the idea. And a question as simple as “How do I choose which social platforms to be on? " is a very important decision that can make or break your success. 

Committing to a social media platform is a big deal. It becomes a touch point where your audience discovers, connects and interacts with your business and brand. It becomes a piece of the internet that represents your business. It becomes the place where you share curated content with the aim of furthering your business's strategic goals. And, from a practical point of view, it also becomes a piece of your business that you invest a lot of time and effort into. And of course, whenever you decide to build up a presence and an audience in a particular platform, you are expecting to get results from that, right?

Right! So choosing a platform for your business is very important because it has the power to impact the visibility of your business, how your audience discovers or engages with your content and how well you attract and convert clients. So the overall success of your business depends on it - no pressure right? 

Choosing the wrong social media platform means loads of wasted time & efforts and many other struggles down the line that could have easily been avoided. This happens more often than you think purely because of the pressure that entrepreneurs feel to be “everywhere” or be “visible”. 

Don’t fall for it

While it might seem like a no-brainer and you might say “Just do what everyone else is doing and go on Instagram or TikTok!” or “Just be on all of the platforms you can think of” . This is not the right approach and that’s exactly what most people do wrong. 

They don’t spend any time and effort on this important question and instead go straight for the “obvious choice” social media platform that’s trendy or they go for all of them at once without having to choose. You just can’t say that they are the best in ALL cases. You need a much more strategic approach to making the decision of where your precious energy and time will go. 

By giving into the pressure to be on the ‘trendy’ platforms, trying to juggle and maintain a presence in 5+ platforms all at once or by blindly following the masses on the ‘obvious choice’  -  that's how most business owners get it wrong and end up wasting so much time, energy and effort with zero results to show for it.

Why we get pulled into the deep end 

Wasting your precious time, energy and effort each day with zero results to show for it is truly the worst that can happen. 

This happens when you’ve chosen the wrong platform, you’re trying to be on 5+ platforms all at once, or you’re not applying the right approach for that specific platform. This mainly happens when entrepreneurs don’t know any other way to go about it so they copy what everyone else is doing and hope for the best. But that can be incredibly time consuming and demotivating.

And you know what’s worse? Once you commit to a platform, you can get stuck with it because of not wanting to admit that you made a mistake, trying to make something work that isn’t right for you or simply trying to hustle through it because “that’s what everyone else is doing”. 

It’s a snowball effect. Once you start creating a presence on any given platform (also the one that’s wrong for you) you will invest time, energy and effort into trying to make it work. If you see some results but not the desired results, you’ll invest even more time and effort into it. But since it was not the right platform to begin with, or you didn’t apply the right approach to it, you end up investing SO much time with very little to show for it. And the worst part is, you can’t stop now. You’ve already spent so much time on it that you can’t throw it all away?! The sunk cost fallacy is doing its thing. 

But here’s your reality check. You already know in your heart that it’s not right for you so stop trying to force it into existence. It’s not sustainable. It makes you stressed and desperate. It makes you feel undervalued and unappreciated. It drains your energy and time. This is a vicious cycle that is draining and it’s one of the reasons why business owners burn out, get completely fed up with trying to grow their business or give up altogether.

And before you think that I’m shunning any particular social media platforms, even if they are the trendy ones that everyone’s on, let me clarify. I'm NOT saying that the popular platforms are always the wrong choice. Sometimes following the masses will work out simply because that’s where the masses are and because you got lucky. BUT it will not ALWAYS be right and it will not be right for EVERYONE. 

Instead…
